Ankle Pain

What Is Ankle Pain?

Ankle pain is caused by injury or disease to the bones, muscles, cartilage, and tissues called ligaments and tendons of the ankle. Your ankle is responsible for the stability and movement of your foot, taking on a lot of stress on a daily basis, leaving it prone to injury. Signs and symptoms that indicate you may need physiotherapy include popping in the ankle, swelling, bruising, inability to put weight on the affected foot, or stiffness.

What Causes Ankle Pain?

Injury or disease that affects the ankle structures mentioned above may cause ankle pain. Common causes of ankle pain stem from injury to the ankle such as rolling the ankle, or having flat feet. It can also be caused by incorrectly planting your feet when walking, sports that involve quick directional movements, landing in an unbalanced way from jumping or or stepping or running on uneven surfaces. Ankle pain can happen suddenly or it can occur gradually over time.
